Police are investigating after a man was shot and fatally wounded by officers responding to a report of a suspicious person in the city.

The shooting happened Sunday morning at the intersection of Interstate 20 and Georgia Avenue, police said.

The man, who had a history of mental health issues, was transported to an area hospital, where he later died.

Officials said officers were called to the area of Georgia Avenue and Illinois Avenue just after 10 a.m. to a call of shots fired.

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Brandon M. Dickson, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police reported.

Police say the officers were able to subdue Dickson before he was fatally shot.

“The officers were on scene for about 15 minutes when they realized that they were in a fire situation and then the call came in that there was a person with a gunshot wound,” Atlanta police Capt. James Coughlin told NBC affiliate WSB-TV.

Police are looking for two suspects in connection with the shooting.

They’re described as a white male and a black female.

Dyson was shot in the chest and face.

Police said they were not aware of any other outstanding warrants.

The incident marks the second time this year that a white man has been shot and critically injured in Atlanta.

On March 26, a man died after he was shot outside a gas station in the suburb of Brookhaven, according to police.

The suspect is still at large.

In March, police found a gun inside a man’s car in an apartment complex in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, police officials said.
